This project designed and fabricated an Improved Mini Cooling Tower (IMCT) with the main objective of solving identified problems associated with difficulties in maintenance of existing Cooling Towers (CT) use for cooling purposes in Nigeria industries. Using observation method, maintenance of CT was studied. Factors affecting proper maintenance of the plant were identified, more information about the plant and its operation were investigated into via internet, journal, among others. Necessary design calculations were done to ensure the aim and objectives are accomplished. Results of the calculations were used for fabrication of IMCT components. It was noted that drift eliminator use in the CT are very scarce and costly in the local market, making its maintenance very difficult. A fabricated condenser fin, using the available and cheap materials, was utilized in IMCT instead of drift eliminator. The performance test shows a reduction of temperature by an average of 24°C from the hot fluid in the heat exchanger, with the Log Mean Temperature Difference between the two fluids of 32°C. The condenser fin performed excellently well having good thermal performance with the overall heat transfer coefficient of 2298.85 W/m 2.°C, attracted lower cost of maintenance and was able to trap atoms of water from escaping from the system. IMCT can find its application in any manufacturing industry and laboratories where fluid temperatures are to be reduced.
