Abstract

Useful properties and suitability of mobile communication of Mobile Ad hoc NETwork (MANET) are discovered in many real world applications. Recently proposed medium access and routing protocols for MANETs have guaranteed significant performance improvements when the traditional omnidirectional antenna is replaced with a smart antenna. Directional hidden terminal problems that are caused by the use of smart antennas need to be resolved for achieving increased spatial reuse. This paper presents a novel routing aware directional monitoring based medium access protocol for MANETs that use smart antennas at the nodes. The focus of the proposed protocol relies on the adaptive adjustment of directional monitoring time in proportion to the size of the sender’s data and making the transmission channel free from collisions. Adaptive directional monitoring scheme enables sender node to be aware of receiver’s condition and the collision-free channel is ensured by using consecutive signaling phases and assertion signals. Our simulation results show that use of the proposed techniques reduces the delay, level of packet drops due to collision and helps in increasing the throughput and packet delivery ratio in the MANETs.
