Abstract

One among the endangered birds that need to be seriously brought into notice is the White Winged Wood Duck. Due to emerging threats around the global world, this majestic duck species is extremely threatened and might face total extinction in the near future. According to reports, the global distribution of this bird species may be impacted by climate change. The development of immediate conservation plans and the mitigation of ensuing hazards may therefore be facilitated by understanding the probable distribution of the White-Winged Wood duck under various future climatic scenarios. The present study deals with the distribution and occurrence of Asarcornis scutulata at Digboi region and its adjoining areas, Assam. The study was conducted for 3 years i.e., January 2017 to December 2019. To determine their distribution, an extensive opportunistic survey followed by a questionnaire survey was conducted to identify their habitats and presence. During the study period a total of 25 individuals were encountered in the study area and habitat loss is recognized as the major threat to the species. The study highlights the current status of the bird species and demands proper conservation measures for its survival.
