Abstract

Determination of pollution status of River Karola is very important as it is the main river of Jalpaiguri town. The work tried to find out the pollution level of River Karola to control contamination of pollutant. Some physicochemical parameters like pH, Phosphate, Chloride, Total Kjeldhal Nitrogen, Turbidity, Conductivity, Alkalinity, Total Dissolved Solids, Chemical Oxygen Demand, Biochemical Oxygen Demand, Temperature, Total Hardness and Total Solids were measured. Water samples were collected from three points of River Karola within the Jalpaiguri Town and analysis was done. The experimental values compared with the standard limits of WHO. The results showed that some of the physicochemical parameters fall within the WHO’s standard and some of them beyond the limit. Nitrogen was present in River Karola mainly in dry season. The important findings of the river suggest source protection of the water bodies for the benefit of mankind because the water is not safe for human consumption as well as for the environment.
