Abstract

Varicose veins(VV) which is defined as dilated, elongated, tortuous superficial veins of leg is nowadays common problem of leg, Various risk factors are Obesity, prolonged immobilization, female sex, trauma, hereditary, VV presents as cramp pain, leg edema, skin changes and ulcer formation. Primary VV is caused by incompetent valve and wall of superficial vens of legs, Secondary VV is caused by Deep venous thrombosis (DVT), pelvic tumours etc. Duplex Doppler USG is gold standard investigation to diagnose vv. Various modalities to treat VVs are Endovenous thermal therapy(laser or radiofrequency) , Foam sclerothearpy, Ligation and stripping. If VVs are secondary to DVT then DVT is treated first by anticoagulants followed by treatment of VV. Multilayer compression dressing is gold standard for venous ulcer, but ablation of superficial vein is needed to prevent recurrence.
